8 Encouraging Statements For Your 2013 Fitness Resolution

Who says the number 13 is bad luck? There is no better time than now – the start of 2013 – to get fit and enjoy good health. You only get one body so it must be taken care of. If your resolution is to finally get in shape and look better than ever, here are 8 bits of encouragement to help make your goal come true:

(1)  Results don’t disappoint – expectations do.

No one will like Tyra Banks, Channing Tatum, or Eva Mendez after a month of exercise. However, even after a lifetime of no physical activity you can significantly scult your body in a reasonably short amount of time. The best way to achieve good results is to make a series of short-term goals that are attainable over the long run. For example, aim to lose 4 pounds a week, or go up in bench press by 5 lbs every other week, etc. Exercise is a series of mini sprints that will help you complete the marathon.

(2) The gym may not be for you and that is okay.

You do not have to go to the gym or hit the treadmill if that isn’t your style. You may not be able to afford the time outside of parenthood or maybe you cannot afford a membership, for example. The good news is there are adequate alternatives to the gym. P90X, Insanity, and other home workout videos do wonders. Also, exercise comes in all forms. Joining a sports team or dance team are fun and easy ways to get exercise.

(3)  ANY diet that says cut out an entire food group is bad bad bad!

Ideal health is achieved with a balance of all food groups. This includes fats, oils, and those killer carbs. Cutting out an entire food group is both unhealthy and very hard to sustain for a long time. Just eat responsibly and you will be fine. Carbs don’t kill people, people kill people.

(4)  You are your most accountable workout partner.

Teamwork makes the dream work. Whether you are putting together a dresser or writing a movie, partners just make the work a tad easier. The same holds true for the gym. Having a partner is fun and a good way to spend time with someone, especially a significantly other. However, be cautious because not all partners are equally dedicated to their fitness. It is imperative that you do not let someone else’s apathy slow down your progress. Your fitness will only be achieved by your hard work and no one else’s. The infatuation phase for fitness is short lived. Each January, gyms are crowded with people who swear they will get fit in the new, but by February the excitement dies down and the crowd thins. Maintain your excitement for exercise and do not let someone else detract your goal.

(5) Let variety add some exercise excitement

Most things we do habitually tend to get boring. How exciting is brushing your teeth or driving to work everyday? Fitness must be ingrained as a habit, and it too may seem like a mundane task one day. When this happens, spice up your routine. There are infinitely many exercises you may do and they are easy to find. Do not underestimate the power of free videos on YouTube. Many trainers post videos detailing their routines. Also, playing music while you exercise can add a little more fun to your workouts. Get some catchy tunes and sing along in your head to forget about the pain!

(6) You don’t need a personal trainer

Personal trainers are very helpful, but they are also very expensive. Three personal training sessions are likely to cost as much as a one month gym membership. Personal trainers are a good starting point if you have no exercise experience, but they are anything but necessary. Trainers can show you new exercises and how to maintain good form without hurting yourself. If you elect to have a personal trainer, just a few sessions is all you need to get the gist. After that, you can use what you learned and exercise on you own. If you are the type of person who needs extrinsic motivation to exercise, then exercises classes are less expensive than a personal trainer and you can achieve the same results.

(7) Your hair is easier to fix than your heart

Many women have a valid concern about sweating out their hair in the gym. This may be a necessary evil, but it should not prevent you from taking care of your body. Damaged hair is much easier to fix than damaged high blood pressure and cholesterol. Besides, as you improve your body it will get you more adoration and compliments than you hair ever would!

      Analysis paralysis ensues when people spend so much time thinking about their business plan that it hinders the actual work of bringing the business into fruition. The made-up financial projections, target audience surveys, and exploration of competing businesses are time consuming and expensive. These discourage the proactivity of executing your idea and learning your business as it develops.

          Consider that the vast majority of new businesses fail, especially restaurants. Yet, you would not include a projection of why your business too will fail, right? Therefore, spending a lot of time and research on an elaborate business plan that does not necessarily enhance your probability of success can be a waste of your valuable resources. Even Steve Jobs once said, “Say no to focus groups and market research.”

The following entrepreneurs did not have a business plan and went on to experience phenomenal entrepreneurial success.

       Businessman Robert Croak encountered cute, animal-shaped rubber wristbands on a business trip to Japan and decided to market the bands as kids’ accessories in the United States. Thus “Silly Bandz” were born and became a sensation with kids.

Engineer Lonnie Johnson had an idea to make a water gun after noticing the force at which water shot out of a hose during an experiment in his basement sink. That water gun later became known as the “Super Soaker” and sold millions of units.

Mark Zuckergberg, the founder of Facebook, became an accidental billionaire when he built a website for people to share pictures and updates about their current lives.

While each of the aforementioned entrepreneurs had specialized skills, the overarching principal remains that execution of your business should not take a back seat to developing an extensive business plan.

   Of course, there are some factors that all aspiring entrepreneurs should contemplate in their business exploits. Location, what products and/or services will be offered to consumers, and start-up costs are essentially elements to planning your business. However, don’t make the mistake of letting extensive analysis and research bog down bringing your business to life. Executing your entrepreneurial idea is the strongest business plan you can have.

I read this story and I was so moved by the challenges and successes of someone who succeeded at life changes.  Admirably, Rene Syler did not go under emotionally, and just die in her spirit or flesh.  This sistah of humanity took on the fight of adversity and won.

I hope you will be so inspired or at least encouraged with a “today” relevant example of reinvention and personal development.  In her own words, an Article by Rene Syler.

Rene Syler, 49 of Westchester, New York, co-anchored “The Early Show” on CBS in 2002. But after losing her job in 2006, Syler was faced with a number of health setbacks and a shrinking job market for “women of a certain age,” she said. Now the mom of two teens runs a successful parenting blog called Good Enough Mother, based on a book she wrote, and makes personal and television appearances addressing the misconception that being a good mother means being perfect. She spoke with Huff/Post50 associate editor Anthonia Akitunde. Here is her story in her own words:

I was a local anchor for about 12 years at various stations across the country. After two interviews in New York, the then-president of CBS News, Andrew Heyward, called and offered me a job as “The Early Show” anchor. My husband and I had just built our dream house in the Dallas/Forth Worth area of Texas and were planning on staying a long time, but I moved to New York four months after we moved into the house. He and the kids stayed behind while I commuted to and from New York — going home on weekends only — from October 2002 until they moved up the summer of 2003.

I had a great job at CBS: I had the opportunity to meet these really famous people for three minutes at a time and I had a paycheck attached to it. But I also had people looking over my shoulder, telling me what to do, making sure [I was] following the procedure … If you didn’t do something right you heard about it. There was a lot of pressure if the ratings weren’t there.

The president who had hired me was gone and the new guy made no bones about his distaste for the show’s four-anchor format. So when he came in, he went: “You.” I guess I knew things were going to change on some level, but I think whenever it happens, no matter who you are, there’s a degree of shock that goes along with it.

Two weeks after I lost my job in December of 2006, I had a mastectomy. I had to have a mammogram every year because I was at the age, but also because of my family history. Every year I would have a biopsy after the mammogram because there was always something that needed a closer look. It got to the point where it just wasn’t really how I had envisioned my life. And that’s when I made the decision [to have a preventive mastectomy]. It wasn’t an easy decision and I always tell people these are the kinds of things that you have to go through and think through. It’s not the right decision for everyone, but it was the right decision for me. Now I don’t even think about it. It was just something that had to be done. I have never had one regret for having the preventive mastectomy. I don’t feel like less of a woman and I have the knowledge and comfort that I have done everything in my power to be healthy.

A year later I was on a tour for my book “Good Enough Mother: The Perfectly Imperfect Book Of Parenting” and traveling around the country. Somewhere on a plane I got asthmatic bronchitis. I was in the hospital for three days pumped full of all this medication. When I got out, I had a meeting at CNN and I went right to the hairdresser and got my hair relaxed. A week later it fell out. It was really this journey of self-exploration and acceptance — that’s when I let my hair grow in natural.

It was all part of this huge kind of reinvention. I initially thought I would go back to TV, but I’m a woman of a certain age and they’re just not that many anchor jobs out there for women like me. I had gone to my agent and said, “Look — can we get anything else for me?” And he was like, “What am I going to do with you if you don’t want to do TV news anymore?” That’s when I really started writing; it was the only tool in my arsenal that could really change the course of what I was doing.

I didn’t really want “Good Enough Mother” to be a business because I was trying to get back into television. About a year ago, I started to understand that “Oh, wait a second. I can actually make money doing this.” Now it’s not just a blog, it really is a business: I have ads on my site, I do campaigns with various companies. I’ll give a speech now and a younger person will say, “Hey, my friend told me you used to be on CBS!” They have no idea that I had this whole other life.

I never ever thought I would be in this place. I never saw myself doing anything else but anchoring the news, and I certainly didn’t see myself working as hard as I am, or struggling the way that I am. I wish I had a dollar for every time I pulled into my driveway and broke into tears because I was like, “Is this going to work?” When you work for people your entire life, the idea of being able to do whatever you want, to be your own boss is a really cool and wonderfully freeing thing. Sometimes all of that freedom is scary, but that’s what I would say is the most gratifying.

When we were younger we used to hear, “Learning is lifelong.” We would go, “Oh, sure, that’s sweet.” But it’s true, you really are going to have to work your entire life until they put you in a box in the ground. You’re going to be working, you’re going to learning, you’re going to be changing, you’re going to be morphing. And if you’re not, then that’s not good! I don’t know if you want to call it a second act or a reinvention or whatever, but I feel like I’ve fared better than a lot because I have been really ready to embrace everything that comes along.

I was like Job. How much worse could things be? I lost my job, I lost my breasts, I lost my hair. But now I look back and I think in losing all those things I really found myself and who I’m supposed to be. The best way to describe it would be the me that people see on the outside finally matches the me on the inside.

Choose to be Rich?                      I still have choice.  Amazing. I choose the good report!

How to overcome fear of failure and build a mindset for wealth

Over the years, I’ve done a lot of research on the brain. The reason why I became so interested in the brain was because I often observed that people generally say one thing but do another. I was curious as to why this was the case.

For instance, I might ask a person, “Do you want to be rich?” His response would be, “Yes,” but instead of doing what is required to become rich, he will often do things that instead make him poorer, not richer.

An example of this would be a man who has a great investment opportunity with a great potential for return and instead saves his money and passes on the investment. Another example would be a woman who has a growing business that requires her to quit her job to go to the next level but instead closes her business and stays as an employee.

These are decisions ruled by fear, which is what often rules our brains. In my studies, I discovered that there are three basic parts to our brain.

The left brain

This part of your brain is generally accessed for reading, writing, speaking, and logic. It’s the kids who do well in school that are left-brained. And left-brained people excel at such professions as writer, scientist, lawyer, accountant, and schoolteacher.

The right brain

This part of your brain is generally accessed for pictures, art, music, and other things associated with creativity and imagination. Right-brained people don’t always excel in school because they don’t thrive in rigid environments. Designers, architects, musicians, and other creative are generally dominated by right-brain thinking.

The subconscious brain

The subconscious brain includes the “old brain,” often called the primitive brain and is most like an animal’s brain. Because of this, it’s the most powerful part of our brain.

The subconscious brain doesn’t think. It reacts. It fights, flees, or freezes. The subconscious brain also involves our intrapersonal intelligence, how we relate to others in a given situation. Because of this, intrapersonal intelligence is the biggest factor in whether or not you will be successful or a failure in life, love, health, and money.

Can you control the subconscious?

The short answer is yes.

Those with a high, intrapersonal intelligence have the ability to control their subconscious brain’s desire to fight, flee or freeze. They have the intelligence required to choose the appropriate subconscious response to a given situation. This means that if they’re angry, they can remain calm. If they’re afraid, they can confront and overcome their fear.

Most people don’t have the ability to control their subconscious, and most people are ruled by the fear that lives in their subconscious.

If you want to be rich, learning to control your subconscious mind before thinking and making decisions is vital.

Choosing to be rich

For most people, fear of failure holds them back. Teachers use this fear of failure to motivate people in school. “If you don’t study hard, you won’t get a good job.” Bosses use it to motivate you to work hard. “If you don’t work long hours, you’ll be fired.” For many, fear is a prison that holds them back from their potential.

For example, I have an attorney friend who earned straight A’s at Harvard. He’s one of the smartest men I know. He wants to change, but he can’t. He wants to do something new, but he’s afraid of failing and not making enough money. He told me, “I’ve been an attorney for so long that I don’t know what else to do. Who will pay me what I’m making now?” He’s left-brained and controlled by his subconscious brain.

The problem for my friend, and for many people, is that he primarily spends his time with people who think, act and talk like him. He can’t stop thinking, acting and talking like an employee because every person and environment he engages reinforces the mindset of an employee in his subconscious.

In order for my friend to change his mindset, he must change his environment. The same is true for anyone who wishes to become rich.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, start hanging out with entrepreneurs. If you want to be an investor, start hanging out with investors. As you change your environment, you’ll see your mind begin to change as well.

This is a choice, and it’s not an easy one. The easy choice is to continue doing what you’re already doing. The hard choice is to beginning the process of changing your mindset—the process of choosing to be rich.

This starts with increasing your financial intelligence through financial education through books, seminars, and coaches. Through these endeavors you’ll find people who will help you change your mindset. And as you change your mindset, you’ll find it easier and easier to control your subconscious and overcome your fear.

I was reading this email letter on business tips for momprenuers.  I thought it was a great read and had  such great advice  so, I wanted to share it.  I

wanted to share this article by a very successful woman by the name of Maryellen Tribby.  The advice is good for all entrepreneurs.

“I think you have a serious problem with your business model with Working Moms Only,” Rich said.

All I could manage to blurt out was, “Excuse me?”

But in my mind I was thinking, “Look buddy, numbers don’t lie.”

In the first 30 days of opening my doors for business for WMO I had a cool $145,000 sitting in my business account. Not bad for a $10,000 investment. After all that is an ROI of 1,450% in just 30 days!

When the median yearly household income in the United States is about $43,000, I would say that’s pretty good.

Plus, after just 6 months in business I had made more than my entire salary the previous year as a big-time CEO for one of the world’s most successful information publishing companies.

So what the heck did Mr. Smarty Pants Rich mean when he said I had a problem – a serious problem at that! – with my business model?

Once the steam stopped pouring from my ears, I asked him to explain.

“You come off making it look too easy,” he said.

“First, let’s look at just the business aspect of your life. You were a big-time publishing executive for years in New York City. It doesn’t get much tougher than that.

You move to Florida, not knowing anyone… And wham! You not only wind up at Weiss Research, you become the first and only female president that company has ever seen.

You take that company from $11 million to $67 million in just 12 months. Every financial publishing company in the industry is trying to recruit you and you have Clayton Makepeace, one of the top copywriters in the world, so totally enamored with you that no one he has worked with since can live up to your achievements.

“Then you go and take over Early to Rise, an Agora company, and it happens again. You take that company from $8 million to $26 million in just 15 months. Plus you launch the best marketing campaign in the company’s history. Given the talent that company encompasses, that is pretty freakin’ impressive.

“Practically everyone in our industry is begging you to come run their company so you can make the same magic happen. But instead, you leave all the comfort of your cushy CEO job and start your own company in one of the worst economic crises our country has ever known…

And just one year later you merge with Ryan Deiss and have your own 30 million dollar publishing empire with 45 full-time employees.”

“Now let’s talk about your lifestyle,” Rich continued.

“You do all of this while raising three kids. Hell, I see you every Saturday at the tennis courts and your daughter is always so happy taking her lesson while you take yours. Your other two kids do great in school and sports. You volunteer at their schools.

“Plus, when Ann and I run into you and Patrick out on a Saturday night you two look like newlyweds and you have been married for 15 years!

“I don’t have a clue how you have the time to write best-selling books and speak at industry events around the world. Let alone run your business.

“So do you see my point MaryEllen?” Rich asked me. “Most working moms out there are probably thinking they can’t compete with you.”

Rich’s words hit me like a ton of bricks.

You see, I don’t want any working mom to feel like she has to compete with me or anyone else. I am here to teach, help, and empower working moms. Not make them feel like they can’t reach their goals.

So here is a secret I have not told many. Listen up… because it’s kind of hard for me to put it out there.

It wasn’t always this way for me.

I wasn’t born with a magical playbook. I developed my success playbook over years and years of trial and error. I developed systems that work… strategies anyone can put to use.

And it all starts with five essential skills you must master.

Recently, at a conference I spoke at in Las Vegas, I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Gerber. So much of what he and I talked about made tremendous sense. And I saw these five factors as some of the essential keys to my success.

I have never sat down and wrote them out before, so take note.

The 5 Essential Skills Every Mompreneur Must Master for Success

1)  Concentration – focusing your attention on where you are and what you are working on at all times. This is the opposite of multi-tasking. I hear working moms brag about how good they are at multi-tasking. It makes me sad. That’s because, when you are multi-tasking, nothing gets your full attention. To create extraordinary results, your full attention is needed.   Concentration is a skill and it takes practice. Start that practice today.

2)  Discrimination – choosing when, where, and how you focus your attention. Most entrepreneurs and business people fail not because they are lazy or because they don’t work. They fail because they work on the wrong things. You need to understand what is important and what’s not. Which tasks, projects, meetings, emails, and phone calls will yield revenue and which will not? Unfortunately, most people work on things they are comfortable and confidant doing. That’s not often the right thing or the most important thing to be doing.

3)  Organization – turning chaos into order. As a working mom you do it all the time in your home. So why don’t you incorporate the same skill and time into your business? You could come to my house and see the kids running around having a grand old time… But when the clock strikes 8:00 it is bedtime. I know it, my husband knows it, and most importantly my kids know it. But guests are always shocked. How did we do this? It is a practice that we have reinforced over the years. The same organization and repetition apply to your business.

4)  Innovation – thinking about improvement rather than always thinking about change. If you are doing something now, there is always a better way and there is always a best way. And because we live in an ever-changing world, one day your “best” way will need and should be on its way to “better.”

5)  Communication – forming strong relationships with your colleagues, employees, and clients. All relationships, whether business or personal, hinge on our encounters with another person stacked end to end. In survey after survey, those who lack strong interpersonal skills are tagged as less competent, less attractive, and less qualified as leaders. The ability to communicate successfully can turn any product into a franchise.

Once you understand the importance of these skills and practice them on a regular basis, you will be ready to apply hard-core business and marketing skills so you can achieve the life you deserve.

Today, I’m challenging you.  Spend a few days to think about all the life lessons you’ve learned since you were 18, 21, 30, or whatever age you choose.  There are tons of lessons I’m sure.  Things you want to tell your sons and daughters, share with friends, and mistakes you hope not to repeat. There’s pain you don’t want these folks to experience.  We know these experiences have shaped you and made you the wiser person you are today.  Spend a few days mediating. Jot a few thoughts down.

So here’s the challenge: write a letter to your younger self based on these thoughts.  I’m going to do the same thing. I’ll come back in a week or so and will share my thoughts and/or excerpts from my letter.

Then, if you feel led, share the letter with your sons, daughters and other friends who are younger so they learn from these lessons or mistakes.   Help others heal and grow from your life.  Your experiences and wisdom make it worth while!

Much Like Trayvon Martin.

They are 17, 16,and 15 years of age.  They are honor students from a Catholic school background.

My boys like to wear sneakers-white, black, red and white and blue. They wear blue jeans and hoodies too.

My boys talk and text on their cell phones fairly oblivious to anything else as they walk and talk.

     I am an attorney,  practicing malpractice defense, family law and criminal defense.  In fact right here in Central Florida.

 Fifteen  miles or so from where Trayvon Martin , the African American boy, 17 years of age, on the cell phone, talking with a girl, going home with candy in his pocket was shot and killed.

As a criminal defense attorney, I am trying to understand the reason it was initially determined that no crime was committed.  There was a dead person.  A  dead child without a weapon and 

not committing a crime.

A child walking home to his father’s house.  Being where he’s suppose to be.

Trayvon was reported as being suspicious because he was an African American -male walking with blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a hoodie.  I am trying to figure out what made him suspicious. 

Was being black young and male?  Was it the hoodie?  Was it the blue jeans or the white sneakers. 

The Moms of Black teenager sons need to know.  What should my sons not wear so they won’t be profiled as suspicious and shot to death. 

My sons can change every article of clothing but, they can’t change the color of their skin.

Certainly, had he been white, Trayvon’s fate would not have been the same. This Mom and Dad would still have their son.

Now Where is justice? Is it hiding in color of Zimmerman’s skin.  

 Is it hiding in the State Attorney’s Office or even maybe the Sheriff’s Department? 

Why wasn’t Zimmerman tested for drugs or alcohol?  Why wasn’t the teenage girlfriend of Trayvon

contacted and questioned?  She was the last one to speak to the child.  Why was there delay in releasing the 911 tapes?

Zimmerman violated the neighborhood watch rules .  Never to carry a weapon.  Never confront a suspect. 

Let’s not even talk about killing an allege suspect  coming from the store with candy in his pocket.

The bigger question is why Mr. Zimmerman was not immediately arrested and charged with at least Aggravated Manslaughter.

I am a citizen of the SA.  I am an Attorney  a defender of the the people. I am a Mom and a parent and my heart hurts for the parents of Trayvon Martin.

What a fine son!  What a handsome Black boy to be proud of!

On the other hand,  What an opportunity for justice to be done.  What an opportunity for justice to not have a profile of color.

Racism. Profiling. Cover up.  Without a doubt. 

But, there will be justice for Trayvon Martin.
